This ongoing course aims to delve into the direct teachings of the Buddha himself as preserved in some of the oldest records of his discourses. The foundation stone of the course is the Majjhima Nikaya, the Buddha’s Middle Length Discourses. Although each class builds on those that precede it, students can enter the course at any time. As the themes of the Buddha’s discourses are mutually implicative and closely interwoven, it will not take long for the earnest student, even one entering the course midway, to acquire a clear sense of the fundamental framework of the teachings.
The course will give the student a detailed overview of all the major teachings of Early Buddhism, including:
- Life of the Buddha
- Fundamental Ethics
- Meditation and Mind-training
- Nature of True Wisdom
Although the course has already started, those wishing to attend may join at any time. There are no prerequisites. Students should have a copy of The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha, translated by Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi. There is no fee. Previous exposure to basic Buddhist teachings is recommended but not required. If you are unable to attend on Tuesdays, you can make an appointment to listen to the recorded classes at your convenience, or listen to the class recordings available online. The course syllabus is posted on our website. If you have any questions, please call the monastery or email us and type “Sutta Study” in the subject box.
